Something Old
The Other Mother has organized a blogging carnival once again for Freedom to Marry Week. The theme is the same as last year which means people will be blogging on Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue. I participated last year and thought it was fun, fun and more fun. So, let’s get to the topic at hand, shall we?
My sister is a girly girl and I am not but she has tried, at various points in her life, to show me the joy of girliness. There were makeovers and hot rollers and the Little Miss Sun ‘n’ Surf competition which is captured in the picture above. I can’t remember the exact date this photo was taken but I believe that I was five years old which would make the year roughly 1973 and that would mean that my sister was 19. I have the world’s best older sister, swimsuit competition aside, and she loved doing things with me. It’s no surprise, then, that she would think it fabulous for us each to be crowned Miss Sun ‘n’ Surf in our respective age groups. Sadly, it was not to be. Neither of us won. My sister blames my loss on the black sandals that my mother insisted I wear. I blame it on the fact that I look a little bit more like Miss Shade ‘n’ Repose than Miss Sun ‘n’ Surf. It’s all good though…I was spared the embarrassment of having my picture taken wearing a tiara.

It’s true. If I had won, my life might have turned out completely differently. ha ha.

Your mom had such good “cheerleader” shoe sense. Not so good Beauty Pagent shoe sense.

WOW! Although you are pale as a vamp, you were quite a cutie-patootie in your gingham bikini!

Gingham Bikini – two words that aren’t paired nearly often enough!

I’m soooo happy you don’t have a fake tan and big hair in this picture. You are cute rather than freaky. In case you ever want a ginham bikini again, J.Crew has sold them in years past. You know you want one!

This is so cool. I looked at all the pictures and I actually picked out who I though you were. Then at the end, I had to look for the black sandles, and I was right! As I read, I looked again and noticed how pale you were. I didn’t notice at first. You are too funny. I actually laughed out loud for “miss shade and repose”. So cool.

BTW, whatever happened to the girl to your left? She’s the only one in a one-piece, yet she looks so at ease, like she was born for that ‘shiz.

About that girl in the left, she does look like a natural doesn’t she? I wish I knew which girl won. Looking at this picture today…I have to say that Miguel REALLY looks like me. Slap a bikini and sash on that boy and well…
